Monday Night Raw Match Of The Week
2 min readWelcome to another installment of our Monday Night Raw Match of the week!
This week we venture back to 2007, right in the middle of Shawn Michaels amazing second act. Michaels had put together an incredible string of matches during his eight year return that started back in 2002. This match in particular came on the heels of a sound loss by Shawn Michaels to John Cena at Wrestlemania 23. The two faced each other for the WWE Championship at Wrestlemania, and Cena pretty much beat Shawn Michaels handily.
The setup to this match was fairly simple, but largely benefitted from a slow build initially. Shawn Michaels and John Cena had taken out the then-tag team champs Randy Orton and Edge, to begin their first and only tag team title run. While the two still held the tag team titles, Shawn Michaels defeated Edge and Randy Orton in a Triple Threat Match to become the new No.1 Contender to John Cena’s title. The two almost immediately started to show signs of dissention in the team, with Michaels consistently playing the role of aggressor. Michaels finally got his shot at Wrestlemania, but fell short in a stellar showing between the two.
Then, at the final RAW before the Backlash PPV, Michaels was dead set on proving to himself and the world that he could indeed defeat John Cena. Live from London, the two put on an absolutely insane 45-minute wrestling clinic. Trading big shots back and near falls, the two had undeniable chemistry in the ring. Finally after reversing an attempt at an Attitude Adjustment by Cena, Michaels cracked off a Sweet Chin Music and collapsed on top of Cena for the win.
