The Samsung Galaxy Fold Will Finally Release On Sept 27th

After months of delays and setbacks, the Samsung Galaxy Fold will finally release on Sept 27th. The re-release comes on the heels of a disastrous initial launch that saw Samsung delay, and then ultimately postpone their latest smartphone. The Fold is very much a niche device, and it sports an insanely high price tag to boot. Early reviews on the Fold saw journalists have either a “love it” or “leave it” take.

To be fair, almost everyone who took the “leave it” approach rationalized their take with the performance of the phone versus the price tag. After all, having to shell over $2000 for a phone that breaks after removing a sticker doesn’t really scream “quality device”. Another point of contention for the Galaxy Fold rested in the design of the hinge. The hinge was just big enough to allow for particles to sneak in and perhaps damage the display from the inside. Something a Verge editor may have experienced during their review tests.

The second coming of the Galaxy Fold seems to carry over the majority of the issues that plagued the first. The screen is still overly fragile and comes with a warning from Samsung to “not use excessive pressure.” The hinge is redesigned, but according to Jerry Rig Everything it is still incredibly easy for dirt or debris to become trapped inside of it. With those two things being the main concerns from the first time Samsung tried to release this phone, I have to ask: What exactly did they fix?

I’m sure we’ll find out for certain in a few days, once the phone is available to be purchased from Samsung and select AT&T stores. The price tag is still set to $1,980 which, in my opinion, is still too high for a phone that carries this many stipulations. The Samsung Galaxy Fold may be the coolest device to release in years. A smartphone that fully unfolds into a tablet could be the wave of the future. For now, I’ll never know. The Fold is a hard pass for me.
