1 min read

The man that brought prosperity back to the Doctor Who franchise is finally making his long-awaited return to the role. Beloved actor Christopher Eccleston is returning as the Ninth Doctor, in a new limited series slated to release in 2021. The series will be several short audio adventures, broadcast under the ‘Big Finish’ branding.

Big Finish will produce 12 all-new, full-cast adventures that will debut across four box sets next year. Full story details and remaining cast announcements are being kept under wraps at the moment. Eccleston himself expressed joy and gratitude at the prospect of returning to the role, saying:

After 15 years it will be exciting to revisit the Ninth Doctor’s world, bringing back to life a character I love playing.

Eccelston was cast as the Ninth Doctor in 2005, quickly becoming a fan favorite. Despite being generally loved by all “Whovians” and successfully reviving the franchise, Eccelston left the role after just one season before the role was recast. David Tennant stepped into the spotlight, taking the role of the Tenth Doctor and launching the franchise into unprecedented heights.

Doctor Who fans can pre-order the new adventures of the Ninth Doctor right now from Big Finish. The collection will be available as either a digital download, a physical CD, or a limited edition vinyl set. Each of the four volumes will be released as a special edition box set or digital download containing behind-the-scenes extras.
