Microsoft’s Next Console Will Be Called Xbox Scorpio

In what could be one of the worst name decisions ever, Microsoft will reportedly be calling their Xbox One successor, the Xbox Scorpio. This news breaks just a few hours ahead of Microsoft’s E3 briefing, where the company is expected to discuss all things Xbox. Gamers have been eagerly anticipating this announcement since as early as last year’s E3, while being met with relative silence instead.

The Xbox Scorpio is rumored to have specs that will blow the current Xbox and PS4 out of the water. For starters, the Xbox Scorpio will support 4K games running at 60 Frames Per Second. Microsoft plans to accomplish this by powering the Scorpio with an eight-core custom x86 chipset. They’ll allegedly be clocked at 2.3GHz which means butter smooth graphics and insanely snappy performance. Microsoft is also doubling down on visual presentation by utilizing a technology called AMD FreeSync. FreeSync essentially ensures that changes in frame rate won’t be noticeable by gamers. It does this by working in the background to dynamically adjust to latency and control the smoothness of graphics.

The console will also feature 12GB of GDDR5 memory, and will feature 326GB/s bandwidth, which is more than both the Xbox One and current PS4 Pro. All of this will also increase graphics performance while running relatively high pixel count and frame rate. Microsoft is also rumored to be changing the power source for the Scorpio, effectively making the system run cooler and more power efficient. The Xbox Scorpio will launch with a 1TB hard drive, that is said to be 50% more memory efficient than the Xbox One. The Xbox Scorpio will launch at $499 this Fall.

I’m excited to watch Microsoft take the stage and finally unveil what we’ve only known as project Scorpio. You can watch the press conference live on the Microsoft website as it happens!

UPDATE: Just kidding, the console will be named the Xbox One X. More as news develops…
