The Sleeping Dogs Movie Script Is Finished — Here’s What We Know So Far

Just when I’d given up all hope of ever seeing this project materialize, the movie gods have blessed us with a finished script for the Sleeping Dogs movie. Simu Liu, who’s been attached to star for a minute now, took to Twitter to share photos of the first draft of the script — and honestly, it’s about damn time.

What makes this moment hit different is how rare it is for a video game adaptation to actually make it out of development purgatory. The original Sleeping Dogs was one of those underappreciated gems from the PS3/Xbox 360 era — a gritty, open-world crime story set in Hong Kong that mixed martial arts combat with undercover cop drama. Think Grand Theft Auto meets The Raid with a sprinkle of Infernal Affairs for seasoning. It was slick, stylish, and criminally overlooked.

For years, fans have been begging for more — a sequel, a remaster, something. Instead, we got rumors of a movie with Donnie Yen attached… but even those vanished like a Triad member who crossed the wrong boss. But now? Now we’ve got Simu Liu — budding Hollywood star, action-ready, and apparently just as hyped as the rest of us. His post showing that fresh script draft felt refreshing. Like, “Yeah, this thing’s really happening.”

That’s not to say we’re anywhere near release. There’s still casting, revisions, and all the behind-the-scenes chaos that comes with turning a sprawling, 20-hour video game into a feature film. But this is progress — and in Hollywood, progress on a video game movie is about as rare as an original idea.

The big question now is how they’ll approach it. Will Liu’s Wei Shen go full deep-cover cop, caught between loyalty and survival? Will they capture the beautiful chaos of Hong Kong’s backstreets, the hand-to-hand combat, the emotional weight? Because Sleeping Dogs wasn’t just about punching dudes through fish tanks — it had heart. It had tragedy. It had style.

So yeah, I’m cautiously hyped. I’ve been burned before, but if things can come together like they should, Sleeping Dogs will be something special.
