Thor: Ragnarok First Look

Thor: Ragnarok Exclusive

The next entry in the Thor franchise promises to be wildly different from its predecessors. Not only will we see a shift in tone, but also a shift in setting. In Thor: Ragnarok, we’ll find out hero battling all new enemies and a few familiar faces on a planet called Sakaar.

Events in the film are jump started when the Goddess of Death, Hela is accidentally freed from her prison. Hela will be played by Academy Award winning actress Cate Blanchett. Hela and Thor have an initial conflict which causes Thor to be banished to the Planet Sakaar, where he is forced to become a gladiator. Thor’s biggest worry doesn’t come from the super powered foes he’ll be facing off against though. His biggest battle will come in the form of his former ally and Sakaar’s greatest warrior, The Hulk.

Chris Hemsworth will once again step into the role of Thor, who’ll undergo a bit of a makeover this time around. “It was nice not to have to sit in the makeup chair for that hour each morning,” Chris Hemsworth says. “It felt like a rebirth for me as the actor but also as the character.”

Tonally, Thor: Ragnarok will take on a bit more of a comedic pace than its counterparts. This is largely because of the quirky sense of humor of the director, Taika Waititi. Waititi also directed What We Do In The Shadows, and will be tasked with acclimating Marvel fans to his vision. Ragnarok will also serve as one of the final Marvel films before the epic showdown slated to occur in the Avengers: Infinity War. The Avengers will be tasked with taking down intergalactic baddie Thanos, and I’d have to imagine Thor will play a huge role in that conflict.

Thor: Ragnarok will open in theaters on Nov. 3rd. Check out a couple first look photos from EW’s Thor cover story below!

  1. I don’t think this new direction will be worth it. I could be wrong but I want more action than comedy.

  2. I don’t think it’ll be strictly a comedy movie Lev, I think they’ll just have more comedic elements. The director’s roots are in comedy so I think that’ll play a role in how they shoot scenes.
