‘Gundam’ Live Action Movie Is In The Works

1 min read

The series largely credited with putting the Mecha genre on the map will be making its official big screen debut soon. Popular Japanese anime ‘Gundam’ will be made into a live action film, that will debut in theaters in the near future. Legendary Entertainment announced they will be partnering with Sunrise to create a movie version of the franchise. The creators of Gundam, Japanese animation studio Sunrise, will be partnering with Legendary to ensure the movie is true to Gundam’s roots and central story.

Gundam first debuted back in 1979 as a TV show called ‘Mobile Suit Gundam‘ in Japan. Most of the Gundam series takes place in what’s referred to as the Universal Century. The animation was credited as being the most realistic as it consistently featured weapons running out of ammo, or mechs malfunctioning, unlike other franchises within the sub-genre. It’s become a wildly successful franchise spawning several spinoffs including TV series, video games, and books.

Details for the upcoming film are very scarce right now, but will leak as production begins. Interestingly enough, Legendary Entertainment Produce Cale Boyter will oversee production on the Gundam film. Boyter also produced the new Pacific Rim movie, which draws heavy influence from the Gundam franchise. Either way, this is pretty exciting news for fans of the Gundam franchise, or if you just so happen to like giant, badass robots.
