The US Still Used Floppy Disks To Launch Nukes

In the most hilariously startling news of the week, the US Military has finally upgraded a highly important weapons launch system. Up until this month, the military used a computer from the 70s and 8-inch floppy disks should they ever get the order from the President to launch nukes.

While this feels like a story straight out of an 80s movie, it sadly is not. The system used to execute our deadliest show of force has been powered by a supremely outdated system. The system was called the Strategic Automated Command and Control System. Yes, SACCS. Yes, it’s ok if you chuckled. SACCS is old, but it is also virtually unhackable as it was created long before the internet was.

The system was originally intended to get upgraded by the end of 2017. While the military states that they were tasked with upgrading several key components, but there’s been no confirmation as to whether it was completed or not.
