Here’s Your First Look At Netflix’s “One Piece” Live Action Adaptation
2 min readFans of Monkey D. Luffy will be pleased to know that the live-action adaptation of the legendary anime, is getting closer to its official debut. In fact, Netflix finally debuted the first official teaser for the show and it looks… Decent. One Piece debuted as a manga published in Shonen Jump back in 1997. Shortly after, it was developed into an anime produced by Toei Animation in 1999 and it has enjoyed a successful run spurred on by movies and several other multimedia projects ever since.
One Piece tells the story of Monkey D. Luffy, an aspiring pirate assembling his own crew to go after the most legendary treasure ever, the coveted “One Piece.” As of last year, One Piece has over 500 million copies of the manga in circulation in over 60 countries, making it the best-selling manga franchise of all time.
Netflix has had a really shaky run with their live-action adaptations of beloved animes. Each one so far has been panned critically, while fans of the source content are usually torn. The most recent live-action adaptation, Cowboy Bebop actually lost fans midway through its first season, and despite show runners having plans for a multi-season story, was subsequently canceled. There’s an inherent risk involved with producing live-action versions of such beloved properties, and One Piece will certainly be the litmus test as to whether or not these things can work. Being one of the longest-running and most beloved franchises out there, Netflix HAS TO get this one right.
