Netflix Officially Cancels The Punisher And Jessica Jones, Marvel Responds

Well it’s official . Netflix has announced the cancellation of BOTH The Punisher and Jessica Jones. Both shows are the most recent Marvel TV series on Netflix to get the axe, following Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. Netflix gave each show a second season to wrap up the narrative that began within their first seasons, but that was it. Oddly enough, each show was cancelled without regard to how popular it was on Netflix, and without so much as a consideration for a third season.

Now, some might speculate that this is less of a Netflix call, and more of a power move by Disney behind the scenes. Disney has made no bones about building out its soon to be debuting streaming service. There’s no better way of doing that, other than by using its own already established franchises. Initially, it looked as if each show would be seeing a sudden end, but reading through a statement from Marvel’s Jeph Loeb, it sounds like these series may live on. The statement reads:

It had never been done before.

Four separate television series, each with different super-talented showrunners, writers, directors, cast and crew, coming out months apart and then…

…they would meet in a single event series all set in the heart of New York City.

We called them The Defenders. ADVERTISING

And together we were thrilled by stories of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and even the Punisher joined in!

They said it couldn’t be done.

But Marvel assembled amazing teams to write, produce, direct, edit, and score 13 seasons and 161 one-hour episodes.
