Joss Whedon Tapped To Direct DC’s Batgirl Movie

DC Studios may have just gotten the push it needs in order to better compete with Marvel’s cinematic universe. Avengers: Age Of Ultron director, Joss Whedon is in talks to direct an upcoming ‘Batgirl’ movie for Warner Bros. Whedon had a rather unceremonious exit from Marvel after the release of Age Of Ultron. One has to wonder if that played any part in DC wanting him to direct Batgirl.

In either light, Whedon adds some much-needed flair into the DC universe. While their movies typically fare well at the box office, critics and fans alike are usually left sour. One of the biggest travesties so far in the DC Universe was the critically panned Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice.

According to Variety, if Whedon and DC closes the deal, not only will he direct, but he’ll also be signing on as a writer and producer. This basically gives Whedon almost total creative control of the look, feel, and overall direction of the film. Batgirl would be DC’s second woman character to get her own lead film, behind Wonder Woman. Batgirl is one of DC’s most popular characters, and it’s a wonder that it’s taken this long for a film highlighting the character and her origin.

Batgirl was first introduced to comic fans all the way back in 1961, with Betty Kane playing the role of Bat-Girl, a sidekick to Batwoman. In 1967, the character of Barbara Gordon was introduced and placed into the role of Batgirl. Barbara Gordon is of course, the daughter of Jim Gordon, Gotham City’s Police Commissioner. Batgirl has seen many roles over the years, but none as large as the role she played in the narrative from the ‘Killing Joke’ comic. In it, she was assaulted and eventually paralyzed by The Joker, only to be recreated as the computer genius and Jarvis-adjacent, Oracle.

The Batgirl project is still in its infancy and there’s been no word on additional cast and crew. Nerd News will keep you updated as more info becomes available!
