Google Is Rumored To Be Working On A Pixel Watch
2 min readGoogle is reportedly working on an official smart watch to accompany the next generation of its ‘Pixel’ brand smartphones in the fall.
For right now, it’s being dubbed the ‘Pixel Watch’ and could become a reality soon. Plans for a new watch would make sense, as the company just recently rebranded their wearables division from Google Wear into Wear OS. This was almost certainly a move to accommodate new functionality as well as a new identity for their smart watches. According to noted leaker Evan Blass, he’d received word from a “reliable source” that Google’s next big event will indeed introduce the world to a Pixel watch.
With Google’s I/O conference wrapping up this week without mention of the Pixel Watch, it’s safe to assume they’ll hold off until their Fall event. A Pixel Watch could be just the thing Google needs to further dent Apple’s stronghold on the wearables market. The last iteration of Android powered smartwatches left a lot to be desired, and could not compete with the buttery smooth integration of the Apple Watch to the iPhone. Now, with a renewed focus on hardware and software Google can pull off the previously unthinkable and create a great end to end experience between phone and watch, and do it all in-house.
It’s high time for Google to take the next step in progressing their ecosystem. Presenting the world with a badass Pixel Watch would be the best way to do that, without taking too big of a risk. The prospect of another great Pixel device is exciting enough, but add in a watch, and that quadruples the anticipation. Whatever Google’s Fall event brings, I’m totally ready for. Hopefully it includes a sweet new Pixel Watch in addition to a powerful new phone. The ball is now centered in Google’s court..
