Google Previews New Facial Recognition Tech For Pixel 4

2 min read

Earlier today, Google unveiled a few more new features headed to the Google Pixel 4. While many people are focusing on the look of the next Pixel device, the actual tech inside seems to get lost in the shuffle. Pixel phones, after all, have never been the best-looking devices made. Where other phones excel in looks, Pixels excel in delivery. Giving users a pure Android experience wrapped in some seriously next-gen features that continue to be trendsetting in the wireless space.

One of the new features Google discussed today was the highly rumored “Soli” sensor. This sensor will sit front and center on the Google Pixel 4 and will allow the Pixel to detect motions around the device. This will essentially allow users to do things like silence calls, skip songs, and snooze alarms just by waving your hand in front of the device. Google is aiming to combine unique software algorithms with this new advanced sensor so that it can detect motion when you’re nearby.

There will also be a new face unlocking feature debuting with the Pixel 4. Google is touting it as being “easy, fast, and secure.” With their new tech, they’re also taking a swipe at Apple and their FaceID sensor which requires your phone to be upright in order for it to work. With this new Google facial recognition, you can essentially hold the phone in any orientation and it’ll still work. This is again accomplished by Soli, which basically starts the unlocking process as you’re reaching for the phone. The new facial recognition tech will also work with payments as well, adding an additional layer of security to your device.

Google seems to be working on a pretty loaded device, with the Pixel 4. Again, this phone won’t win any beauty pageants, but I personally think that’s part of the allure. Loading it up with next-level tech won’t be the only thing to make it successful either though. They’ll have to find that perfect balance between hardware, software integration, and price point if they really intend to do damage. The unfortunate reality is no matter how COOL the Pixel phones are, Google still struggles to move them off shelves. Either way, their announcement in October just got a bit more exciting.
