Instagram Is Getting Ready To Introduce Premium Subscriptions
1 min readAs more people began to work from home or were laid off due to the pandemic, there was a seismic shift in the way people created and consumed content. Sites like OnlyFans and Patreon enjoyed an explosion in popularity as a result. This change in consumer behavior would eventually force other media companies to look inward to find ways to make their specific services more profitable as well.
Instagram will be the latest company to join the mix, as they prepare to introduce a paid subscription model for creators on the app. According to a post from TechCrunch, Instagram will soon roll out its own “Instagram Subscriptions” service in an effort to increase the platform’s monetization capabilities.
Instagram’s iOS app store listing was recently updated to include “in-app purchases” as of November 1st. As of writing, the price range for these paid subscriptions range anywhere from $0.99 to $4.99. Instagram is known for dropping new features among a small collection of accounts initially, so it’s entirely possible we won’t see these new subscriptions on a wide scale for some time. Even still, this is an interesting direction to see Instagram go in, and is one that could further revolutionize how fans interact with their favorite content creators.
Before Instagram, Twitter was the latest company to introduce paid content, by way of their “Super Follows” feature. As the battle for platform-exclusive content intensifies, it’s only a matter of time before more services introduce similar services.
