Apple Announces iPhone X

2 min read

The premium version of Apple’s iPhone has finally been revealed, and they’re calling it iPhone X. Not actually pronounced like the letter, its official name is the iPhone 10. It’s essentially (wink wink), exactly like what all the leaks and mockups have predicted it would be. There’s an all-new edge to edge 5.8′ Super Retina display, that rocks a pixel density of 458 ppi. The display is a OLED panel, that Apple is claiming will be much better than traditional OLED displays. It has a True Tone display, that has a million to one color contrast. The home button has been completely nixed in an effort to maximize screen presence. There’s also a pretty gnarly separation at the very top of the phone similar to the one found on the Essential phone. This exists to accommodate the earpiece and front-facing camera.

With the absence of a home button, users will now unlock their devices using Apple’s FaceID technology. Powered by what Apple dubs  the “True Depth” camera system, users will see a significant bump in functionality from the front camera. The new camera system intelligently reads your face thanks to a new Neural Engine. In laymen terms, the camera uses a special 3D tracking sensor that is capable of reading your face from multiple angles. Apple is touting FaceID as being much more secure than that of TouchID. FaceID will also work with ApplePay, so there’s no loss of functionality on that end.

The iPhone X will support the same Qi wireless charging standard as the iPhone 8, thanks to the glass and aluminum design. It will also be capable of working with Apple’s new charging system called AirPower. AirPower will give users to charge their iPhone X, Apple Watch, and AirPods with one universal charging mat.

The true depth camera system doesn’t just work with FaceID. Apple is also introducing something called Animojis, or Emojis you control with your face. The Animojis will work within iMessage, and will allow you the ability to emote other emojis like the robot, the chicken, and of course the favorite, the poop emoji. That’s right, angry poopmojis are headed to your phone soon.

The iPhone X will also sport the new 12MP sensor found on the iPhone 8, but there will be dual camera. As such, it will also have dual optical image stabilization, to aid the HDR feature on the camera, and to stabilize videos. The images shown on stage looked absolutely amazing, and honestly could be a game changer in the mobile photography space. The front facing True Depth camera will also be capable of taking Portrait mode selfies. The camera system on this thing looks pretty legit.

iPhone X preorders will begin Oct 27th, and will begin shipping Nov 3rd. It will be available in 64 and 256GB configurations, and will start at $999.
