iPhone 8 Firmware Leaks, Reveals Several New Features
2 min readWe’re only a few short days away from Apple’s special event, where we’re rumored to finally meet the new iPhone 8. As usual the closer we get to the release date of a new iPhone, the more leaks we start to see. Today, we came across a pretty substantial leak that reveals a ton about some new features debuting on the iPhone 8. Here’s a few of the features that were revealed from the iPhone 8 firmware leak.
For starters, we know that the new iPhone will have a nearly edge to edge display. What we didn’t know until recently, was that this edge to edge display will feature a camera notch in it similar to that found on the Essential Phone. What this means for iPhone users, is the notification bar along the top will get a bit of a refresh. Icons will now reportedly contextually refresh based around what’s being used. For example, the network status will be relegated to the left side of the camera notch, while the Wifi, Bluetooth, and charging status will be displayed on the right. Each status change will now get a pretty cool animation now as well.

There will also be new animations available for the emojis that Apple is now calling ‘Animojis.’ Animojis will essentially be animated versions of the ever popular emojis found in iOS 11. iPhone owners will also be able to take advantage of the advanced facial tracking hardware to animate these emoji with their own facial expressions. These animations will also show up in iMessage, so you’ll now have the ability to finally send that sad poop or happy robot emoji to your friends.
There’s also a new feature being called ‘FaceID’ which will allow users to unlock their iPhones with a virtual scan of their face.
Lastly, the leaked firmware also made mention of an updated version of Apple’s Airpods. The image contained within the leak, looks almost identical to the existing version of the Airpods, save for an updated carrying case. The battery case appears to have the charge level indicator on the outside now, which means you won’t have to open the case to check its battery level now.
These are but a few new features we’re expected to see revealed during the Apple event on Tuesday, Sept 12th.
