LG Announces New 88-Inch 8K OLED Display
1 min readIf you thought the race to have the biggest and best display was slowing, think again. LG has announced an all new, massively awesome 88-inch 8K display which they intend to sell later this year. The panel will be the first of its kind, and LG has seemingly doubled down on their OLED efforts. The previous largest panel ever, was a mere 77 inches, and was “only” 4K capable.
While I’m not sure I’d ever need a TV this big, it does trigger a bit of curiosity within me. OLED TV’s kick off tremendous quality and are most known for their ability to show the depth of darker colors like blue and black. The move to 8K by LG is an especially curious one, as 4K and HDR displays are really just starting to take off. Even though they will be well ahead of the curve on this one, they may also be pricing themselves out of any actual sales.
Right now, LG’s 77-inch panel costs a ridiculous $20,000, so I could only imagine where this TV will drop in at. The average consumer won’t buy this display, which begs the question, who are they selling to exactly? I’m sure we’ll get more answers as we head towards CES 2018, later this month in Vegas.
