Marvel’s Luke Cage SDCC Trailer

Marvel and Netflix had a pretty sweet panel during SDCC this weekend. Marvel took the time to premiere the Luke Cage trailer, and I must admit, it looks damn good. The series set to debut this September, will see Cage head back to his hometown of Harlem NY, where he tries to get a fresh start. As we all know how it goes with superheroes, naturally trouble follows him. He’ll not only have to deal with criminals, but corrupt politicians in his quest to clean up the city.

Those unfamiliar with Luke Cage’s back story should take the time out to read up on him. Primarily known as Luke Cage, he’s also been referred to as “Power Man” thanks to his extremely dense skin and superhuman strength. In the comics, he receives his powers as part of an experiment gone wrong, whereas his origin story has yet to be told on any Netflix show. As seen in the first season of Marvel’s Jessica Jones, Cage seemingly can’t be hurt and poses a major threat to anyone committing crimes on his side of town. Cage also has really strict family values, and is still distraught at the loss of his wife, at the hands of his new love interest. While there’s been no word as to whether or not Jessica Jones will show up in this new series, a familiar face has already been cast in a recurring role. Zoe Saldana will reprise her role as Nurse Claire Temple, a former companion of Daredevil.

With the series being set in Harlem, I’d expect for producer Cheo Hodari Coker to go just a dark and gritty as the Daredevil series. If the trailer is any indication of that, it looks like Luke Cage will be in very good hands. Set to ODB’s “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” Luke Cage delivers a minute long beat down to a few low life thugs who have obviously underestimated their target. Luke Cage is set to start streaming on Netflix US and Canada beginning Sept. 30th, with all episodes releasing simultaneously.
