The Next Generation Of Pixel Phones To Be Announced On October 4th
2 min readAlmost exactly a year to the date the first Pixel phones were announced, Google has another event planned for October 4th. According to a post from their YouTube page, Google will finally reveal what they’ve been working on over the last year. Rumors suggest that Google will be announcing both a new Pixel and Pixel XL devices, featuring hardware from two different manufacturers. HTC will be at the helm once again for the smaller Pixel device, while LG will step in and build the Pixel XL.
The next HTC made Pixel is said to be really closely designed like the original. It will still feature a metal and glass back, a 5 inch display, and some chunky bezels. It’s also rumored to be borrowing a unique feature from the HTC U11, with “squeezable” sides capable of launching shortcuts on the device. The second Pixel model will be the Pixel XL 2 and will be manufactured by LG. This phone will rock the same design as the LG V30, and will have an edge to edge display. Both models will also feature a slightly faster Snapdragon 835 chipset, water resistance, at least 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.
In the oddly run YouTube video, Google is simulating smartphone users Googling some of the most perplexing issues they have to deal with. Searches for things like “What’s wrong with my phone’s battery?” and “Why is my phone always out of storage?” are shown throughout. Under the surface, it appears that Google is making some pretty grand promises here already. Just watching the video, I’m assuming that Google feels as if they have the answers to these questions and more. With the world anxiously awaiting the arrival of the iPhone X, Google may be in prime position to steal some of the spotlight from Apple.
Let’s not forget, last year’s Pixel models are still regarded as having the best cameras available on a smartphone. Combine that with the first truly tight software and hardware integration from Google, and we could be seeing a smartphone arms race for the ages. The biggest mistake Google made with the previous Pixel models, was making them a Verizon carrier exclusive. If they can somehow strike a good enough deal with major US and international carriers, they could potentially move some major units.
