Verizon Wireless Resurrects Unlimited Data

Seemingly out of nowhere, Verizon Wireless just announced they’re bringing back unlimited data. Verizon is just the latest carrier to offer unlimited data, after T-Mobile and AT&T announced similar plans. Both those carriers have some pretty intense fine prints within their unlimited plans though. They both stream video at 480p, and AT&T actually requires a subscription to one of their TV services to be eligible. Verizon looks to be shaking that up by including full HD video streaming, AND including mobile hotspot access Up to 10GB to boot. They’ve also included 500MB of data per day while roaming in Canada or Mexico.

The plans start at $80 for individual subscribers, and $45 per line for a four line family plan. After the fourth line, pricing dips to $20 per line for tablets & smartphones, while smartwatches and connected devices will only run $5 a month. Verizon VP Ronan Dunne highlighted the reasoning behind the plans saying “We’ve built our network so we can manage all the activity customers undertake. Everything we’ve done is to provide the best experience on the best network – and we’ve built it for the future, not just for today.” Dunne continued, “We also fundamentally want you to have more choice. We’re not limiting you to a single plan. If you don’t need unlimited data, we still have 5 GB, S, M, and L Verizon plans that are perfect for you.”

One thing that I do find particularly interesting is the lack of pricing for families that may have more than 4 lines. Perhaps they’re saving that for the full reveal on Monday, but if the plan only supports four lines, that’ll take a lot of steam out of this otherwise momentous announcement. Verizon also said they will essentially cap customers after 22GB of usage, which is also similar to what AT&T currently does. For many Verizon customers, this may be the push they needed to stick around, and for Verizon themselves, this could be the proverbial carrot they need to dangle to win customers back. Update: We reached out to Verizon Wireless to get clarification on the plan details and found that the line limit actually stops at ten devices. The pricing changes a bit once you get beyond four lines, as lines five through ten drop to $20 a month. Customers who have an existing employer discount will lose access to that, as the unlimited plan doesn’t currently support discounts. We also updated the post to reflect the 10GB mobile hotspot access cap, and to add in pricing for connected devices.
