Disney Is In Talks To Buy Fox
2 min readThis story came completely out of left field, but I couldn’t be more excited to hear about it. According to rumor, Disney is actively engaging in talks to buy Fox. This would be more than just an acquisition though, as Fox currently owns several Marvel franchises. Marvel was purchased by Disney back in 2009, and turned the studio into the media powerhouse it is today. If Disney were to acquire the rights to those franchises, we could see the Marvel Cinematic Universe expand into unforeseen territories.
The Marvel franchises that Fox currently owns are home to some of the most important characters in Marvel history. Some of the more notable characters include Wolverine, the X-Men, and Deadpool to name a few. Deadpool was a giant smash hit for Fox, and the sequel is currently in production, while the X-Men and Wolverine franchises are currently on the shelf. If Disney and Marvel were able to get this deal done, the quality and gravity of the stories told through these franchises would be incredible. Imagine the goosebumps you’d feel if you got to see Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in direct conflict with Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk. This is the power the Marvel would be able to wield. It’d be like them adding another stone into the Infinity Gauntlet.
There is one interesting wrinkle here though. Disney would be buying mainly the entertainment leg of Fox, not the full network. That means the broadcast network Fox, Fox Sports, and Fox News would all stay put as part of the deal. This would mainly be done to quell any talks of anti-trust or anti-competition the deal would draw from regulators. The deal would also not include any of Fox’s local affiliate channels.
The latest news shows that the talks have stalled out, but the fact that they’ve stalled shows both parties are clearly interested in getting this deal done. If it does through, Disney will have pulled of a giant coup, and it could be the first major step to getting all of Marvel’s franchises back under one umbrella.
