Netflix Is Testing Its Gaming Service On More Devices

Netflix has been rumored to bring their cloud-based gaming service to a broader selection of devices, but that rumor has mainly been unconfirmed. In a blog post, Netflix’s VP of Games, Mike Verdu detailed exactly what the next phase in rolling out Netflix games will be. Starting today, Netflix will be releasing a limited beta test to a small number of Netflix members across the UK and Canada using select smart TVs, as well as PC and Mac.

Initially, two games will be part of the beta test — A Netflix Game Studio original called Oxenfree, and a gem-mining arcade game titled Molehew’s Mining Adventure. Users looking to game on smart TVs will have to use a proprietary game controller app, while Mac and PC users can use a keyboard and mouse. The limited test will be used to measure the performance and stability of Netflix games across more devices and more active users. Some of the TV manufacturers that Netflix games will be available on include Amazon Fire TV Streaming Media Players, Chromecast with Google TV, LG TVs, Nvidia Shield TV, Roku devices and TVs, Samsung Smart TVs, and Walmart ONN. More devices will be added in the future.

After the initial stress test, I’d have to imagine Netflix will eventually bring its gaming service to the States, but until then, we’ll have to wait to see how the overseas trials go.
