Android N Officially Has A Name Now

1 min read

After months of speculation and being surrounded by mystery (ok, not really) Android has finally revealed the name for their upcoming Android ‘N’ software update.

Google announced via Twitter, that the official name going forward will be Android Nougat. Another tasty name for what could be one of the most intriguing Android updates yet. Nougat is looking to build upon several things that Android does right, while slowly fixing the misses in the OS. VR has been a really big focus as of late, and with Google working on a VR platform they’ve dubbed “DayDream” it only makes sense that Nougat would have native VR compatibility. In addition to that, Google has also made slight tweaks to the notification system, keyboard customizations, battery life optimizations, and added the ability for split screen multitasking.

While regular Android users won’t see Nougat on their handsets for quite a while, Nexus users are in luck. If you have a Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, or Nexus 6P you can enroll in the Nougat Beta program to get your hands on a pre-release version of the software. To sign up, head on over to the Android Beta page, but be warned, this is NOT a final version of Android Nougat and there may be bugs so download at your own risk.
