WarnerMedia Mulling Over Revival Of Popular ‘TGIF’ Shows
2 min readAs if it couldn’t feel any more like the ’90s, WarnerMedia comes out of left field with some straight-up nostalgia. As the content wars continue to heat up, content providers are constantly looking for new ways to lure viewers towards their service. With services like Netflix, Hulu, Sling, and YouTube TV already at the forefront of the streaming wars, it may take quite a bit for a new service to make an impact. With AT&T already pushing two streaming services, there may not be room for a third, but if this latest rumor is true, it’ll have a definite advantage over the competition.
WarnerMedia is looking to revive several hit shows from a very popular time in television. According to Deadline, they are eyeballing reboots of several hit ‘TGIF’ shows for their upcoming streaming service. The shows being considered are Step By Step, Perfect Strangers, Family Matters, and Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper. While there’s nothing concrete or set in stone, a 2019 reboot of TGIF is definitely something that could generate movement to a service that offered them. Love them or hate them, reboots of classic franchises always do at least moderately well, attracting viewers based on nostalgia alone.
As of writing all four of these series are available to stream on Hulu, but that could change should WarnerMedia decide to pull the trigger on reboots. All four shows also enjoyed at least five seasons, so bringing back new versions could end up being extremely lucrative if they’re successful. WarnerMedia’s streaming service is slated to debut later this year, or early 2020, and will launch with a blend of original programming and established franchises.
