Marvel announced a new TV series headed to Freeform called “Marvel’s New Warriors.” The series is the first comedic live action series starring several new Marvel comics characters. New Warriors will follow several of Marvel’s more obscure characters through everyday life, while they learn to adjust to having super powers.

The show will feature six characters in total, but Squirrel Girl will be one of the central focuses. Squirrel Girl (alias, Doreen Green), will play a cheerleader of sorts. A natural-born leader, and an empowering female lead. Doreen Green is a normal, everyday high school student with one exception – she’s a mutant with the powers of a squirrel. She has the ability to speak to and control squirrels, which she used to help Iron Man defeat the nefarious Doctor Doom.

The “New Warriors” tagline could be a direct referral to a fan favorite team of misfits, the Great Lakes Avengers. This hodgepodge of super heroes have some of Marvel’s most hilariously eccentric characters jam-packed into one storyline. I could only hope that Big Bertha, Flatman, Doorman, Mister Immortal, and my personal favorite, Leather Boy are all included in the series. Seriously, if you don’t know about Leather Boy, check him out.

Marvel and Freefrom have an initial order of ten thirty-minute episodes slated to air in 2018. The series will be co-produced by Marvel and ABC Signature. Marvel’s Joseph Loeb and Jim Chory (The Defenders) will serve as executive producers for the series. Freeform will also produce a “Cloak and Dagger” series later in the year.
