A “Women’s Only” Screening Of Wonder Woman Has Men Losing Their Minds

2 min read

A movie theater in Austin, Texas has caused a stir by doing something extraordinarily different. They had the audacity, the unmitigated gall, to host a Women’s ONLY screening of Wonder Woman. I mean, how dare they show a film that features a rare woman lead, with a majority woman cast, that isn’t about relationships, or girls night out gone wrong, to only women. How dare they?!?!? The Alamo Drafthouse theater chose to pay homage to perhaps the most important female hero in comic history, and men are absolutely losing their minds.

Never mind the fact that pretty much every other superhero movie is by large part marketed to, by, and for men. Never mind the fact that just about EVERY other super hero movie has a predominantly male cast, both in front of and behind the camera. Perhaps the biggest point of contention here is that the theater is actually hosting other showings for general audiences. The event invitation details the historic event perfectly. It reads “Apologies, gentlemen, but we’re embracing our girl power and saying “No Guys Allowed” for one special night at the Alamo Ritz. And when we say “People Who Identify As Women Only,” we mean it. Everyone working at this screening — venue staff, projectionist, and culinary team — will be female.

The male outrage on social media has been downright laughable. Reading through the comments on the Alamo Drafthouse Facebook page made me ashamed at my fellow male counterparts. Men are screaming discrimination and sexism, and some are threatening to boycott the theater. There are claims that this women’s only screening is serving to create a divisive environment, and that by not allowing men to work, the Drafthouse is breaking the law.

I don’t personally agree with any of this, and I find it highly ironic that there’s this much outrage directed ONE theater, in ONE town, over ONE night. In fact, I think more theaters should join the Alamo Drafthouse in holding their own “Women Only” screenings. Let us know what you think in the comments below!
