Google Is Announcing A New Pixel On May 7th

2 min read

Subtlety has not been a strong point for Google lately. Last year, their newest Pixel devices were leaked nearly 6 months before an official announcement was made. Now, their two newest handsets have been also leaking at an alarming pace, which may have forced Google to announce them earlier than expected. Google is now expected to announce a new Pixel on May 7th during their I/O developers conference.

Upon visiting the Google Store, you are now greeted with a “something big is coming to Pixel” tagline. While “big” is a bit of an ambitious statement, we can confirm that Google is alluding to a new handset. That handset in particular won’t be an entirely new Pixel phone, but rather a refresh on the current model. The Google Pixel 3a and 3a XL will essentially be phones modeled after the current Pixels and will feature the same powerful camera suite. Beyond that though, the new devices are expected to see a tremendous decrease in build quality. Noted leaker @Evleaks posted a photo of Google’s new mid-range handset in full on his Twitter account.

The new phones are slated to have larger bezels, lower screen resolution, and plastic backs (no wireless charging?) which will also lead to a smaller price point. It’ll be really interesting to see where Google prices them at considering you can get a Pixel 3 Xl for as low as $299 right now. There will also be new, Avengers themed playmojis available on all Pixel devices upon launch.
