Snapchat Suffers A Massive Data Breach

Sexters beware, your favorite app just suffered a huge data breach. Just 24 hours ago, a website launched (and was subsequently killed) that revealed the usernames and phone numbers of some 4.6 million users worldwide. The numbers were available for quite a while, but the last 2 digits of each number were omitted to “prevent spam and abuse”. Ironically the breach comes just hours after a security firm warned about Snapchat’s vulnerabilities, and is already the biggest breach in the startups brief history. The story originally broke on The Verge, and since then, the story has caught on like wildfire, which is believed to have led to the immediate shut-down of the site.

Unfortunately, the photo sharing service patched the massive security flaw AFTER a breach of this proportion. This certainly makes me think twice about using Snapchat, especially since the revelation earlier this year that all your photo data are saved to Snapchat servers. That means your photos actually don’t disappear, you just can’t see them.
