This may be the most exciting news you’ll read all day! Tom Hardy has signed on to play Venom in Sony’s stand alone film based on the character. Hardy will play Eddie Brock, a former friend turned current foe of Spiderman. Venom is without a doubt one of the most popular villains from the Spider-Man universe, and fans will be salivating at the prospect of Hardy playing the destructive symbiote. Hardy also has previous superhero movie experience, last playing Bane in The Dark Knight Rises.

Because of that, he will join an exclusive club of actors who have played a role in both Marvel and DC films. While the other actors on that list may not have enjoyed much success in the other roles, Hardy is primed for another breakout performance. Sony has already gone on record to say their Venom film will carry an ‘R’ rating. This gives Hardy more freedom to play Venom in the most villainous way possible. Venom was last seen in Sony’s Spider-Man 3, played by Topher Grace. While the introduction of Venom into the Spider-Man cinematic universe was awesome, the film itself was not. It was critically panned, and is on the short list of worst Spider-Man movies to date.

Either way, this film now has all the markings to be truly great. With Hardy in the starring role, and Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer attached to direct, Venom looks to be in really good hands. My only concern is the time frame in which the movie is set to release. Hardy just signed on, the film will begin production this Fall, and will hit theaters October of next year. I’m hoping it doesn’t get rushed out too quickly, because Venom is an important enough character within the universe that he deserves a solid outing. In fact, I’d go out on a limb here and say with the right writers and supporting actors attached, this movie could be better than ANY of Sony’s previous Spider-Man films.

Venom is scheduled to be released Oct. 5th, 2018.
